So I guess this is the beginning. To say that it's not a little weird, to see this thing that Charlsie and I started talking about over three months ago finally take shape, would be a lie. To that end, though, this first issue of Consortium is like many first attempts; there's a lot of good here, that's true, but it'd be a little boring if there was nothing to improve for the second issue.
Ultimately, though, Consortium's success will depend entirely upon how well it resonates with its audience.
Issue 1 has taken a more serious and practical tack than I had originally envisioned. There could certainly be more humor and nonsense, and that will be a top priority for Issue 2. In this issue, though, we've got stories that run the gamut from pre-law-school, to the adjustment period early on, right through to legal practice.
Make Yourself and Slouching give a glimpse into the life of students early in the process: from the pretentious B.A. students to first-years looking to reinvent themselves.
A Different Language and the anecdotes from new lawyers discuss depositions, dictation, and technilogically inept partners. It's all rounded out by some selections from Overheard in Law School which provide some levity.
Shortly after this new publication starts gaining its first readers, preparations for the second issue will need to begin. Issue 2 will find itself published in either April or July, depending on the level of interest from readers and prospective authors. Anyone with any interest in contributing to future issues (in any capacity), should email Pete or take a look at the “contact” section on the website.
In closing, I'd like to thank, in advance, everyone who blogs about Consortium or passes the link along to friends. I hope you enjoy, at least a little bit, the product of many hours of work by many different people.
